City of Chesapeake Police K-9

Canine Officer:       Caro

Handler:   Officer Brad Seery

Trainer:    Eric Samuel

Most Notable Accomplishment:

In June of 2005, Officer Seery and Canine Caro assisted uniformed

officers with a high-risk warrant service at a residence in the City of Chesapeake. The K-9 team was assigned a perimeter position on the outside of the house. Uniformed officers successfully apprehended the wanted subject; however the subject escaped from police custody as he was being escorted to a police vehicle. Although the subject was handcuffed behind his back, he possessed a physical prowess that allowed him to outrun uniformed officers that were chasing him on foot. Officer Seery and Canine Caro immediately began to track the suspect. Even though the chase proceeded through a maze of back alleys and fenced yards, the K-9 team was able to close the gap on the fleeing suspect. Once Officer Seery determined it was safe to do so, he released K-9 Caro from his leash and gave the command to apprehend. As Caro neared the suspect, he made one last ditch effort to jump over a fence and fell to the ground in a  prone position. Caro easily jumped the fence and began to "revere" within inches of the suspect's head. Caro maintained the revere, barking and growling loudly, until the arrival of Officer Seery and uniformed officers. The suspect was taken back into custody and eventually faced malicious wounding, aggravated assault, grand larceny, and escape from police charges.

It is a testament to Officer Seery and K-9 Caro's physical ability and training that they were able to get within apprehension distance of the fleeing suspect and that, more importantly, Caro was able to respond appropriately to a once actively fleeing, dangerous suspect who was now lying prone in an unthreatening manner. It goes without saying a serious, possibly life threatening bite could have occurred to a suspect with his hands cuffed behind his back had Caro not had the training and discipline to respond appropriately.
