K9 VETERANS DAY

                            MARCH 13, 2010

The GSDC of Eastern Virginia will begin it's efforts to have March 13th, 2010 declared K9 VETERANS DAY in all of our surrounding cities in honor of all the dogs of all our wars.  They served to save, and they deserve to be remembered.  March 13, 1942 is the official birthday of the United States K9 Corps, even though we did use dogs in wars prior to that.

After all, the dogs bled and died in defense of this great place that we call home, and always, and in all ways they did us all proud.  And they never asked for anything more than food, water, and love.  They deserve, at the very least, a day put aside each year from now on, to remind people that dogs are also Veterans, and to say that we appreciate their service.

In the beginning war dogs meant military dogs.   Today, because of the war on terror, and the ongoing threat to our homeland, more dogs than ever are involved with the war.   Private Search and Rescue dogs were some of the first on the scene at ground zero, finding fallen firemen.  Police dogs were there to, and many more, with some giving their lives in the attack.  And    now Customs dogs are in the fight, and so are Border Patrol Dogs, FBI Dogs, Secret Service Dogs, and even Therapy Dogs, as they comfort the wounded.  So this effort truly has as it’s goal the honoring of all the dogs, of all our wars.
